THE PATH

The path, on a smaller scale and running across a surface with little or no engineering, its longevity is compromised, yet this may be the subtlest of ground markings as erosion then becomes an associate of memory, the scale of ground lines will define purpose, efficiency and pleasure. Some will act as lines of demarcation and others will simply offer archaeological traces.

Arata Isozaki has used the concept of path as the central idea in the Contemporary Art Museum at Gunma, Japan (Arata Isozaki Architecture 1960–1990) (1991), where the circuitous path in the landscape that reveals vistas episodically has been recreated internally to take the visitor on a journey through to the centre of the building. The ramp is designed to allow the visitor repeated, partial glimpses into the central gallery space. These views, caught through a sequence of non-orthogonal apertures, are cubist in concept to enable fragmented glimpses to be made comprehensible on arrival at the core of the building, where the entire gallery can be seen.
